Supporting people with disabilities and their families
The Arc was founded by families who wanted their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities to have the same opportunities as their children who did not have disabilities: to live at home as part of a family, to get a good education that prepared them for adult life, and to be included in all aspects of society.
Today, through a network of nearly 600 state and local chapters across the country, The Arc is leading the fight for disability rights in Congress and in state capitals. We also provides essential services and support to millions of people with disabilities and their families.
Caroline’s Cart and The Arc
We are working together to spread awareness about The Arc and the day-to-day needs of people with disabilities and their families.
As a mom of three kids, Drew Ann Long was always juggling a lot. Once she realized Caroline, her daughter who has Rett syndrome, would outgrow a standard shopping cart but still need a way to get around stores, Drew Ann was on a mission to make shopping easier for millions of families like hers.
This led her to the creation of Caroline’s Cart, a specially designed cart that allows older children and adults with disabilities to comfortably shop with their families or caregiver. Learn more about Drew Ann and follow Caroline’s Cart on Facebook!
Caroline is now a young adult and receives services from a chapter of The Arc.
Take Action Locally
If you’re interested in advocating for a cart at other local stores, you can ask store managers to purchase one or two. It’s a simple way to help make everyday life more inclusive for families of all abilities.
